Operating Department Practitioner struck off

Operating Department Practitioner, Mr Andrew Sandeman-Craik has been struck off the HPC Register for undertaking emergency procedures he was not qualified for. As well as failing to follow appropriate drugs protocols and practice whilst employed at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The HPC Conduct and Competence Committee heard that on two separate occasions Mr Sandeman-Craik undertook an emergency procedure and told managers that he was trained in a similar procedure when he was not.

The Panel also heard that Mr Sandeman-Craik lost keys for a drugs cabinet that were in his possession and whilst under investigation volunteered to take a set of controlled drug cupboard keys, contrary to instructions.

HPC Panel Chair, Mr Colin Allies, commented:

“Mr Sandeman-Craik overstepped the boundaries of his own professional competence and undertook procedures that he had not been trained to perform.

“Mr Sandeman-Craik also knew that he had failed to follow the procedures and that he must have known that this might lead to the safety and availability of the drugs in store being compromised.”

The panel decided the most appropriate action was to strike Mr Sandeman-Craik from the Register.

Mr Sandeman-Craik was neither present or represented at the hearing.
