UK Uncut, the anti-austerity action group, today announced plans to transform banks nationwide into hospitals, operating theatres and GPs surgeries on May 28th to demand that the government focus on reform of the banks rather than of the NHS.

The day of action, happening under the banner ‘UK Uncut: Emergency Operation’, will see banks up and down the country transformed to draw attention to the continuing state subsidy of the banking sector of up to £100bn/year [14] [1] and NHS reform plans predicted to have “catastrophic consequences” for patient care [2]. Activists hope to confirm the support of rapper MC NxtGen, whose ‘Andrew Lansley Rap’ has had over 368,000 views on YouTube [3], stars from medical TV dramas and doctors and nurses unions.

Despite a pre-election promise by David Cameron to ‘cut the deficit, not the NHS’, 50,000 NHS jobs will be lost over the next five years including thousands of doctors, nurses and midwives in a £20bn ‘efficiency drive’ [4] [5]. The Royal College of General Practitioners has warned that the Government’s NHS reform plans jeopardise the principle of universal healthcare, saying that “we are moving headlong into an insurance-type model” [8]. Meanwhile, taxpayers continue to subsidise the banking sector by up to £100bn/year, equivalent to the entire NHS budget [1] [6] [7].

The last nationwide day of action at the end of February saw high-street branches of bailed-out banks turned into crèches, libraries and hospitals in 40 different towns and cities across the UK [10]. The Uncut movement continues to spread around the globe, with US Uncut staging hundreds of occupations of tax dodging corporations across a four-day period in April [11] and Portugal Uncut holding its first actions [12].

“The banks are paying lavish bonuses and raking in billions in profit off the back of taxpayer subsidies yet the government tell us ‘there is no alternative’ to unprecedented public sector cuts. That includes the cuts to the NHS that Cameron promised would never happen,” said healthcare worker and UK Uncut supporter Jack Davies, 27. “The government should be cutting benefits to banks, not the NHS and other essential public services.”

UK Uncut supporter Sophie Healey, 33, said: “Whilst NHS satisfaction is at a record high, the banks are still costing us billions each year. It shows the government’s true colours that they would rather privatise the NHS than fix the broken banking system.”

The General Medical Council (GMC) has created the interactive Medical students: Professional values in Action to bring its guidance to life and help understand how it would be applied in day-to-day situations.

Medical students can also test their knowledge through several quiz questions and case study dilemmas. They can take on the role of either a medical student or the medical school and face a variety of challenging situations encountered on clinical placements or during their time at medical school. All of the activities reinforce good practice in line with the GMC guidance; Medical students: professional values and fitness to practise.

Medical Students: Professional Values in Action

Interactive Case Studies from the GMC

GMP in Action brings the GMC’s ethical guidance to life. Choose what the doctor should do in a series of case studies highlighting how the principles might work in practice.

Waiting Room 1

Choose this waiting room to consider issues from Good Medical Practice, including: raising concerns about colleagues; supporting self-care; conscientious objection; and advertising.

Waiting Room 2

These case studies explore principles from GMC guidance about consent and about children, including: access to children’s medical records; if a young person refuses treatment; discussing risks; and assessing capacity.

Waiting Room 3

Choose waiting room 3 for case studies exploring issues including: maintaining professional boundaries with former patients; child protection concerns; and raising concerns about patient safety.

Waiting Room 4

Case studies in part 4 consider issues from the 2009 confidentiality guidance including reporting knife wounds and responding to press criticism, and also highlight guidance on management and consent.

Waiting Room 5

Case studies in waiting room 5 deal with issues surrounding end of life care, and explore different situations where disclosure of confidential information may be justified in the public interest.

Practice your life saving skills…….

Initial Assessment

The first moulage on the Internet! In this moulage you are an emergency room doctor and must assess and adequately treat an injured patient. You have an assistant to help you, but they can be of variable help, as in real life. Remember the basic principles of trauma resuscitation and you won’t go far wrong.

Prehospital Care

Having finished with the last patient, you head up to the helipad to escape from the ER for a while. Things never go as planned however and 5 minutes later you are on a motorway 15 miles away. This is a prehospital scenario, but the principles of trauma management still hold, perhaps more so. You have an experienced paramedic to help you, and all the kit you might need.

Cervical Spine Clearance

Suddenly and inexplicably transferred to the spinal service, you have to assess and evaluate six patients with potential cervical spine injuries.

Paediatric Moulage

Transferred back to the ER after generating too much work for the hospital’s lawyers on the spinal service, you have to manage a child injured in a motor vehicle accident. The child’s parameters and response to your treatment will change with each run through – and you’ll get a full appraisal of your performance at the end of the moulage.

Neurotrauma Moulage

The Neurotrauma Moulage demonstrates the principles behind the care of the head injured patient. Using a mathematical model to approximate brain neurophysiology it is able to simulate a wide range of conditions that affect brain injury management, both in the emergency room and on intensive care.

Trauma Team Leader Decision Scenarios

Multiple short scenarios where you, as team leader, have to tread the path of the enlightened trauma doc.

This educational package has been produced as a helpful background and training package to basic patient observations in the clinical workplace.

This is an area that the MHRA know from reported evidence is often misunderstood. The MHRA have produced it to be of use to all clinical staff; either for someone new to the role or to a long standing professional as a reminder of best practice.

The package covers basic observations, including taking a pulse, checking blood pressure, measuring respiratory rate and taking a temperature.

The educational package is presented in two forms. In the review version you can have multiple goes at each answer to learn as you go through. With the certificated version you only get one chance at the questions and you have to achieve over 80% success to obtain the certificate of completion.

Medical Devices play a crucial role in all care and treatment. The number and variety of medical devices is huge and increasing with healthcare professionals handling a wide range of devices every day in their practice.

As the agency responsible for regulating and ensuring that medical devices are safe and fit for purpose, the MHRA has prepared an educational package which provides a practical guide to medical devices for all health and social care professionals including pharmacists.

The package takes less than 15 minutes to complete. Click here to take part in the training.
